A collaborative community project with the Creation Theatre Company
A week or two back while I was enjoying a pizza with the girls my phone rang, it was the lovely Fiona from the Creation Theatre Company - she wondered if I and some stitching kitchen regulars would be interested in helping out with community quilt project, she said something along the lines of.....
"The Creation Theatre Company are based in Oxford and specialise in putting on site-specific adaptations of classic texts. This summer we are producing The Tempest around the Osney Mead Industrial Estate, and we are lucky enough to have received some Arts Council funding to help us to do this. As part of the funding we are hoping to engage some local community groups in the show, and I would love for your social stitchers to be part of this.
We are hoping to make a patchwork quilt, which will live in the show and represent the quilt from Miranda's childhood, forming part of the set of one of our venues. Each community group will make at least one patch (but it can definitely be more depending on interest), and then we will sew them all together to make the quilt. ......
She also offered to bring materials and inspiration pieces for us to work with so I thought, why the heck not!
A handful of the regular Friday social stitchers were also interested and a few others who can't make a daytime session were up for helping out too. So I have decided to dedicate an evening and a Friday morning to the project. Thursday 11th July 6pm to 9pm and also the social stitch on Friday 12th July 10am to 12:30pm
During these sessions we will be making quilt blocks (small ones approx 3"square) for a group quilt which will form part of the set for an upcoming performance of 'The Tempest' for the creation theatre company at Osney Mead industrial estate, Oxford. The production is running from 19th July - 15th August.
This will be a great opportunity to stretch your stitching muscles, or perhaps learn a new stitch or technique.
So if this sounds like a fun project to be involved in then do join us on either Thursday 11th July 6-9pm or Friday 12th July 10-12:30 or both.
Normal Social Stitch will also run on Friday if you would rather bring your stitching along - both sessions will cost just £5 for cuppa and cake - plenty of help and inspiration will be on hand.
