Sewing Machines – what to buy?

Bernina 770QE like big bertha

I am often asked which sewing machine or brand do you recommend. As I am sure you have gathered I am totally into recycling and reusing so I would always go for a second hand machine over a new one, but I know that this is a risky approach if you have no experience.

Basic starter sewing machine – Brother LS14s

If you have only just started sewing or have never sewn I would always recommend this machine as it is light weight but solid – simple with very little that can go wrong with it. I have the equivalent model from over 15 years ago and it is still going strong and has taught lots of people how to sew!

Mid Range Janome Sewing Machine

If you have a larger budget and would like more functions on your sewing machine then I would advise this beauty by Janome. Janome make fabulous machines and not only have a great reputation they are consistent are rarely cause problems for either their owners or their sewing machine engineers.

Major investment (but worth it) – Bernina Quilting Edition

For me there is no comparison to a Bernina – I have three in the studio of various ages and I love them all. My quilting is done on this machine, I know its a big investment and if you want to come and have a go on mine before making the big jump and purchasing your own please feel free.
