Results of After School Club – Term One 2022
Each week Sonia updates me with what the current group of after school textile craft and sewing club have been up to. I can’t believe how talented these young people are and I can’t wait to see where there imaginations will take them next term. Here is a quick overview of what they have achieved this term….
This sewing project was done by hand and haven’t the young people chosen some vibrant colours to make these sea turtles. Felt heads and flippers are perfect as felt doesn’t fray.
The girls were inspired by the Dorset button I created at Festival of Quilts and so created their own Dorset buttons. These are worked around a ring and then a series of crossed threads give a base to weave the centre part. These were the first kind of buttons ever used and transformed garment construction.
The use of a sewing machine is a great skill to learn and a project like making a taggy blanket for a baby is a great one to practice pinning everything in place, stitching accurately and then finishing with top stitching for a professional look. I think they did a great job.
In the run up to halloween Sonia showed how to make a pumpkin from an old orange sock – don’t they look great!
As this term comes towards the end there were more halloween fabrics to create these yo-yo hair clips. Yo-yos are also known as Suffolk puffs and can be used as decorations or to create a quilt.
If this has inspired your young crafter to come along and have a go at sewing and textile based crafts booking are now open for next term. After School Club currently runs on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30pm and costs £20 per week, bookable by the term. You can book your place using this link.
